Wow! What a hot, fiery read 🔥 Marni Mann did it again, creating two characters that have so much steam, they just easily create an inferno! You will feel the need to fan yourself off reading this book, even if the wind chill outside is in the negatives like it is here in Georgia right now! 😳

Let me be clear: the chemistry in this book is on the next level! It’s not just about that, though. I also love both the characters of Declan and Hannah. Declan is such a hard headed fighter who has confidence in spades and doesn’t know how to lose, anyone or anything. Hannah is smart and strong and capable and sweet. She is independent and on her game, and has no problem going toe to toe with Declan!

Declan and Hannah are such an stand out couple. They are each other’s perfect match not only personally and romantically, but professionally as well! Their chemistry as they work together on law cases is fun to read and easy to picture them both in the court room. I also love what they can represent for each other if only they can get out of their own ways. 

This book was a great read overall! Another wonderful addition to the Dalton Bros stories!! Thanks for another great book, Marni and thank you to Valentine PR for the chance to read and review this book early!

I don’t even know where to begin! It’s been a while since I’ve been in the Dark Ones world, but man oh man did Darkest Power remind me how much I freaking love this series!! It is so original, so different, so engaging and entertaining! I loved this story. I loved getting all the cameos of the other immortals in the series I’ve previously fallen for. I loved learning more about Horus and being introduced to Kit. I loved their star crossed lovers story. They both had to sacrifice so much and go without so much for the other, it just about breaks your heart. Add in a redeemed fallen star and wowza- this book will hit you in the feels with all the heart, angst, sacrifice and love. The scene where all the immortals (minus Horus) join Kit outside… tears rolled down my face! There are so many touching moments in this book as well as little blips that make you smile or laugh, it really covers a wide variety of emotions for the reader. I loved this book overall and think it is another great addition to this series. I will be waiting with baited breath for Bannick’s book next because I am so intrigued by him after this book. Please let it happen soon RVD, Please!!

Review:

Hayes freaking North. I have been waiting, not so patiently, for this man’s book for what feels like forever and let me tell you- it did not disappoint!! Hayes has been such an enigma through this North Brothers series. He’s easily always been the one you love to hate. Knowing myself though, I knew I would end up finding some redemption in a character that seemed unredeemable through earlier books. JB Salsbury has a way of making you feel so strongly against a character but also still search for that sliver of a soul on the inside. That was definitely the case with Hayes.

I’m so glad we finally got to hear more of his story. I loved learning about his childhood, his history, even though there are obvious parts we all wish we were different. I love what Vanessa was to him, then and now. I love that he has always encouraged her to be exactly who she should be. I hate the choice he made as a young, immature teen, but I also don’t ignore the fact that he had August as a father and that most certainly impacted Hayes and his decisions growing up. 

Hayes getting to meet and get to know Haven was everything. It made my heart hurt for all the time that was lost, but also made it happy to see him just jump in as best as he could figure out to do. I love his fatherly development in this story. I loved his emotional maturity as we watched it grow and unfold. I loved his fierce love of Vanessa as a person and how strong she is and how strong she raised their daughter to be. I love their fire. I LOVED the end of this book. There is just so much about this story that I love, it’s hard to put it all into words. Cruel North was another incredible installment in this series and I am so happy I had the chance to read this one early. Hayes and Vanessa’s story kept me locked in from page one and I hope to be able to read more one day! I also have to mention- I love the cameos of all the other characters I’ve fallen in love with in this series, thank you for that Mrs. Salsbury!!

“Come on, people, we went over this yesterday.” Mr. Lewis’s voice ricochets off the wall in the back corner of the classroom, jerking me awake.

I’d finally found a comfortable enough position, forehead in my hand, face pointed toward the open notebook on my desk. I managed to keep my pencil tupright in my free hand so that I would appear to be deep in concentration rather than drifting in and out of sleep.

Offended by the blunt awakening, I scowl toward the front of the class at our teacher as he pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose. Lanky and pale, Mr. Lewis is the walking definition of virginity over forty. With his mouth in a tight line and eyes magnified through glasses, his gaze darts through a sea of slouching students.

“No one, huh? Not even a guess?” He must feel me glaring because his bug eyes land on me.

“Shit,” I mutter to myself.

“Mr. North.” He manages to look down his nose at me from twenty feet away. He may make decent money teaching at Burton Prep, but he’ll never come close to the net worth of every student in his class—save for the scholarship kids. “What is the kinetic energy of the question on the board?”

Dawson, my hockey team’s left winger, chuckles beside me. Asshole.

“Eighty-two.” The answer’s wrong, but I say it with enough confidence that Mr. Lewis checks his notes before sighing in defeat. My dad always told me that if I’m ever unsure—fake it.

“Eighty-two,” the teacher mumbles with a you’ve got to be fucking kidding me tone. “That’s incor—”

“Six point five seven meters per second.” The confident female voice comes from the front row. Another nerd speaking nerdlish.

“Yes, Ms. Osbourne, well done. It’s nice to see at least one person is paying attention in class today.”

Of course, he’s looking right at me.

I roll my eyes and slump back into my chair with a shrug.

Goodness gracious, y’all! The angst was strong in this one!! Wow, this book brought out such strong emotions and seriously physical symptoms for me as I read this book. I could feel my heart beating faster, my temperature rising, my anxiety shooting through the roof… for fictional characters!! Having such a physical, visceral reaction is a huge compliment to RVD’s incredible ability to write such an amazing story. Every book she writes has heart and emotion and love and pain and all sorts of other feelings. This book is no different. This book was written in a dual POV form (my favorite) which really helped develop each of the characters and had me loving and hating (at times) each of them in their own ways! Mary Belle, Ambrose and Quinn are all so different yet so similar in some ways too. Each of these characters draw you in and make you pull for them so strongly, in one way or another. It felt like my heart was torn A LOT through this book in the best of ways. There’s so much I could say about this book, but RVD suggested going into this book blind and so I did. And now that’s my suggestion for you. My review could go into great detail about the characters, the storyline, the good, the bad and the ugly, but it won’t. I want you to experience all the things I experienced while reading this book! I want you to take the leap that I took with these characters as they lept through some huge life experiences. There are some hard things discussed in this book and I think RVD has an incredible way of showing the true emotions and experiences that come from situations like this. Overall, I was just thoroughly impressed with the incredible writing of this story and the emotions that ensued. The only thing that could’ve made this story even better was to get a chapter or two from Quinn’s POV. I am so curious what it would say and so curious how his story will play out. Oh, how I would love for this book to have a sequel. Please RVD, please!!

This short story was a great little breath of fresh air. It was a quick read, but the storyline was full and had characters that you fell for within its short few pages! Shelby Lyn is the type of girl you can easily imagine yourself becoming best friends with. Wilder is the guy who got away but was so good you could never give your heart to another. I loved this little small town atmosphere with everyone knowing everyone’s business in good ways and bad. I loved Shelby’s self made wreath business and Wilder’s readiness to come back home and make a difference in his small town, while also winning over the girl he had to leave behind. Overall, I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading Missy’s story next!! I also loved her as a friend and can’t wait to find out what happens with her and Charlie!
