Things I hadn’t expected to happen on my birthday . . .

1. To go from brunette to orange when I was aiming for blonde.

2. To run into my ex and his new girlfriend, who happened to be sweeter than my favorite candy bar.

3. To literally collide with a wall of muscle belonging to Lucas Donovan, the extremely sexy cornerback on the Virginia Thunder. 

Did I say collide? No, I didn’t just collide, I lingered. How could I not? The man smelled like a dream, felt like heaven, and looked like a Greek god. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought my best friend wished him for me when she helped me blow out my candles. She was all about me finding Mr. Right, except I’d never been lucky in love . . . nor was I looking. 

And despite all of his wonderful attributes, Lucas wasn’t my type. So when he asked for my number, I declined. Why? Because I knew he had cleat chasers and numerous athletic supporters at his beck and call. Totally not my scene. Instead, I decided to chalk our encounter up to a perfect ending to a perfectly messed-up day.

Thinking I’d never see him again, I was shocked when he popped into my store to ask me out on a date. To say I was thrown a bit off - kilter would be an understatement. Maybe that was why I eventually accepted. Or it could be because I knew my best friend would disown me if I kept turning him down. Not to mention, the man had enough charm to fill my boutique and then some. 

Finally happy, I figured my luck had changed. Maybe Lucas Donovan was my Mr. Right. But then my past slammed into my present. And all I wondered was what that meant for our future.

Review:

What a cute read!! I have loved this world of sports romance that Carina Rose has created since the very first chapter of the first book in this series! There’s just something fun and lighthearted, but also full of emotion and love (and a little drama) in each of these books! Lucas and Harley’s story was no different! I usually gush about the male lead in my reviews, first at least, because who doesn’t like it when the guy is exactly the type of guy we want to read about?? But- for this book, most of my gushing is going to Harley! I just love everything about her. She has this sense of strength about her, this fierce independence and this strong ability of knowing her worth and sticking up for herself that I so adore. She goes through difficult times and allows herself to feel them, but she also looks at things logically and emotionally, not one or the other. She is clearly fashionable based on her outfit and hat choices (in my imagination at least) and seems to be a great friend to Sophie as well. She’s kind when she doesn’t have to be (above and beyond with how she treated Cami) and fair. She’s willing to sacrifice for the people she cares about, whether she’s known them a week, months, or years. I just love the woman that Harley represents.

Lucas, on the other hand, I had mixed feelings for! He started off SO strong. I love his heart. I love his relationship with his sister. I love his focus, his determination, his work ethic. I love how he pursues Harley. I don’t love the lack of fight at some points. I don’t love that a certain someone didn’t get at least a nice talking to. I don’t love that he was willing to just let some things be. I know  there were some tough things that happened in this book and tough places to be and to know what to do, but he did not respond the way I wanted dang it lol!! The good news is he eventually had a lightbulb moment and began to show me the things I so wanted to see and reminded me why I loved him so much in the beginning!

The end of the book was wonderful. I loved everything about it. I am so excited to read Collin’s book. I’m also desperately hoping Sophie gets her story told too. Overall, I am just head over heels for this football team and it’s family and want to read all about them, every one! Keep these stories coming, please!! I always look forward to them!!

Review:

Dang, does A.L. Jackson know how to write a good book or what?! That ending was just… perfection. There were twists, turns, highs and lows throughout the entire story and I couldn’t get enough!

Logan and Aster are the modern day Romeo and Juliet. Star crossed lovers doesn’t even begin to cover it. There’s no way their love, their relationship could ever work in their worlds. Families wouldn’t allow it. Their lives wouldn’t allow it. It’s forbidden. 

But, love is strong. Love perseveres. The heart knows when it’s found it’s match. As a reader, you can feel from reading just the early pages of this book that Logan and Aster are two parts that make a whole. They belong together, even when they can’t be together. Your heart breaks when their hearts break. You laugh when they laugh. Jackson has a way of making these characters so special that you can’t help but cheer them on, feel their pain, hope with them, grieve with them. She’s such a talented writer and this next installment of the Redemption Hills series was everything I hoped it would be. It is filled with love and drama, hope and loss, suspense and contentment. I loved getting to witness some more of the other characters we’ve already fallen in love with from this series. You can really feel the love and understand what family is supposed to be when you look at this group. None of them have ever had it easy, but boy do they love one another. Logan and Aster are the perfect addition. Her North Star and his little star. I loved the immediate Fantastic Foursome. I cannot freaking wait for Tessa’s story. I can’t wait to see her with someone who deserves her! Gretchen literally had me laughing out loud. Juni and Gage stole my heart in this book just as they did in the others. 

All of it was just so freaking good. Another fantastic job well done, A.L. Jackson! Thank you for another perfect installment to this incredible series!

Ahh, I can’t believe it’s finally here and I can’t believe it’s already over!! I fell in love with both Max and Allie in book one of this series. I love them both for such different reasons. From the very beginning, I’ve loved Max’s fierce need to protect Allie at all costs, after his first initial self proclaimed screw up. Once he spoke to Allie, she was it for him and he would do anything, literally anything, for this girl. That’s dedication and love and loyalty right there. I love that he is her dark protector/defender. I love that she has gone through so much and still keeps going. She still keeps pursuing the truth. She still keeps striving for what she deserves and eliminating what she doesn’t. I love her perseverance. I love her how she encourages Max. I love how she loves Max and shows him that love can be good, that it doesn’t always hurt. So many emotions about this story coming to an end. Some things happened that I wasn’t surprised by. Some things happened I didn’t see coming. Overall, this book was a highly anticipated read for me and I am so glad I’ve been able to read this conclusion but so sad at the same time. Thank you for these incredibly well written characters and stories, Ms. Sykes- what a great series to read!

Tension bound the room, and few words had been said, everyone’s attention rapt on the duel

going down.

Jarek tried to keep his expression neutral, the pompous prick with his slicked back black hair and

his careless confidence that had been given to him through his name rather than earned.

Like he was confident I would let him reach out and take what was mine.

Not ever again.

Even with the pungent arrogance, I saw the tick of his jaw, the flinch of his eyes, the sheen of

sweat that hinted at the edges of his brow and glimmered beneath the dull lights from the chandelier

that hung from above.

He glanced at his dwindling chips.

“Your father-in-law would be proud. If only he could see you now.” I couldn’t help but taunt it as

I rocked back in my chair. I did my best to ignore the presence that hovered over him from behind.

A presence that fanned out and teased me like a sinful, decadent dream. A dream that had once

been so beautiful it’d coerced me into believing there just might be something better in this life than

depravity and greed.

I glanced up in time to catch the worry that riddled those fire-agate eyes. The golden green with

flecks of red that were begging for something she didn’t deserve to be given.

Mercy.

I tore my attention from the lure of hers and watched as redness clawed at Jarek’s throat before

he started to push in the chips to meet the bet.

Aster gripped him by the shoulder. “Jarek, don’t do this.”

I had to wonder exactly what he had riding on the line. Why he was there. Why I could feel the

chinks in his armor coming apart.

Flinging off her hand, he cut her a hard glare.

“Don’t,” he warned.

The word was coated with his humiliation. With desperation.

Ah.

There was the chink.

Weakness wept through the powerful persona.

Reluctantly, Aster withdrew her hand, and her delicate throat trembled as she swallowed. She

lifted that stoic chin that I’d caressed more times than I could count.

Okay, fine.

That was a goddamn lie because I remembered every fucking touch. Every glance. Every broken

promise she had made.

Jarek met my stare as he pushed nearly the rest of his chips into the pot, raising me by a

thousand.

I raised him another ten.

How far are you going to go, asshole? Whatever you have, it’s mine.

A soft sound of pain wheezed from Aster’s chest. A heave of distressed air.

My gaze followed to where the black dress she wore dipped low between her tits. My heart

fisted when I saw what she wore around her neck. It was a star-shaped necklace, dangling down to kiss

her cleavage.

I nearly cracked. Lost the control I was holding onto.

It had to be a joke.

A taunt.

A fucking cruel, sick twisted one, the girl coming down here and parading it like a slap to my

face.

It made my teeth clench and the fury I was barely constraining flashfire through my veins.

I tore my attention from her when Jarek spat, “Fuck,” under his breath.

He still clutched his cards, refusing to give up the fight.

Haille laughed, the sadistic fucker enjoying this far too much. He looked at Jarek. How the hell

he knew him, I didn’t have a clue, but I didn’t believe in a coincidence quite this big. He pulled his cigar

from his mouth and jabbed it Jarek’s direction. “It seems you’re in a small predicament, Mr. Urso. Are

you already going to walk? And here I thought you were going to bring something interesting to the

table.”

Jarek all but growled, and Aster’s gaze darted between the three of us. Nerves flew from her

soft, caramel flesh. That face carved of perfect lines and smooth skin tightened in dread.

He’d brought something interesting to the table, all right.

“Just cut your losses, Jarek.” She begged it quietly, but I heard the strength behind it.

Jarek roughed his hand down his pompous face, and he turned to look at the necklace around

Aster’s neck as if it could be a solution to his issues.

Aster gasped, and her hand came up to protect it. Tears sprang to her eyes. She took a small

step back. “No,” she wheezed, like it would physically pain her to remove it.

I wanted to jump to my feet.

Take hold of her and demand answers.

Demand to know why.

Why had she done it if she could stand there and look like there was a piece of her that was

broken.

Anger and confusion had me in a stranglehold.

Old grief I’d buried deep that was clawing to the surface.

“Give it to me,” Jarek grated.

“No.” My voice cut through the dense air.

A roll of thunder.

The tolling of a challenge.

Aster froze. Her stare landed on me.

It was pain.

A plea.

Desperation.

It only made the sickness thrum harder.

I looked to Jarek.

“The girl.”

The stake came out without thought to repercussions.

Without rationale.

No sense.

Just revenge.

I wanted what never should have been his.

A gasp rocked from her, and she stumbled back farther.

Jarek’s eyes sharpened to blades, and there was no question he wanted to reach over the table

and choke the life from me.

My fingers itched.

I hoped he tried.

I gave nothing. No smile. No sneer. Just the quiet hatred that emanated from within. The fact I

intended to take everything from him.

I’d known one day I would. I just hadn’t anticipated the opportunity would present itself so

soon.

He blinked then jutted his chin at the dealer for the exotic chip.

The one that signified he would hazard my proposition.

It wasn’t rare. A bid made for a beach home. A family heirloom. Something that couldn’t be

replaced. Here, fortunes were won and lost.

“What are you doing? I am not for sale.” Aster’s voice was aghast. Horrified and filled with

disgust.

“He’s bluffing, Aster.” Jarek tossed in the chip.

It was the first time I let myself fully look at her. To sit back and take her in like she was mine to

take. Sickened terror ridged her gorgeous face because I was pretty sure she knew this wasn’t close to a

bluff.

I couldn’t do anything but crack a grin. “It seems you are tonight.”

Then I laid down my cards.

A straight flush.

What an ending!! This book was definitely different from what I usually expect from JEM, but I loved it all the same! When I initially found out that JEM was doing a royal romance, I knew it was going to be something different than anything I’ve ever read from her and it was, but it also brought the same incredible writing I have come to expect and love from any book she pens. She always knows how to leave us on the edge of our seats as readers, waiting for the next shoe to drop. I think this may be the slowest of slow burns she’s ever written, but that also makes it all the more intriguing! At the beginning of the book, I didn’t know if I was going to feel strongly about the characters in this story or not, but by the end I was hooked! Eliza is a spitfire and I love her rebellious, defiant, but loving and loyal nature. The duke is dark, mysterious, curious, and passionate. I also loved Frank and Clara. I am thrilled to know there is going to be a follow up book because I need more of this couple and I want to know about life for everyone else, too. I have a lot of mixed feelings about Eliza’s parents and their choices but then at the same time, it’s hard to throw stones in an era I have not been privy to live in. This book definitely brought forth some emotions with characters and certain scenes, but I love when that happens. I know that I’ll still be thinking about this book tomorrow and that, to me, is a mark of a great story. Well done JEM, thank you for another great book!

Review:

OMG! That ending!! I’ve looked forward to every new book in this series, but with that ending… I’m going to need Hayes’ story right about now, Mrs. Salsbury!!! I’m both shocked and ecstatic about being so excited to read Hayes’ book as he is easily one of those characters that you can’t stand, but I also know JB will find a way to redeem him in the reader’s eyes.

Anyway, enough about Hades. Can we talk about Hudson and Lillian?! What a perfect match! I love everything about Hudson. I’m a sucker for a savior, probably because I just love when a man loves his woman and wants/needs to do everything he can to protect her. Yes, please! And I adore Lillian. I love her quirkiness and I love that she starts to own her ADHD and quirks towards the end. I also LOVE the collaboration that comes later in the book for her, her new job is an absolute best case scenario that I didn’t even consider but now just freaking love. I love Hudson and Lily’s relationship. I love when she gets past her insecurities and Hudson can admit to himself how he really feels. The only thing I feel like I’m missing with this book is more on how things ended up with Lily and her family. We know that she continues a relationship with Aaron even though he seems like a succubus, I just wonder what happened from the time she threw everything in the apartment at him to make him get out, to then her celebration party towards the end. I’ll likely never know but I had this thought and I felt Lily would appreciate me randomly inserting this thought into this review!

Moving on… I also of course loved getting to see the other North brothers and their partners that I’ve also previously fallen in love with. There was so much good in this book. It was a perfect installation into the North Brothers series and up to par with how fantastic the other books have been. I finished this book with a big smile on my face and also so many questions for the next story. I can’t wait!!
